Canadian Wood Council: Fire Resistance and Sound Transmission Class Tool
We designed, developed, and launched the Fire Resistance and Sound Transmission Class Web Application for walls, floors, and roofs.
A new generation of Online Tools for Canada’s construction professionals
The way we search for and receive information is rapidly changing. Canada’s architects, builders, engineers, and other professionals have moved past paper-based design and now rely heavily on computer-assisted design. We are continuously adopting new digital media tools to stay relevant and knowledgeable and professionals expect these tools and resources to keep up with their needs.
Following the successful creation and implementation of the Effective R Calculator, the Canadian Wood Council recognized a unique opportunity to develop a Fire Resistance Rating (FRR) and Sound Transmission Class (STC) tool.
buildABILITY Corporation developed an online web-based application for users to search, sort, and reference Fire Resistance Ratings (FRR) of wood assemblies approved by the National Building Code. The application included the STCs and FRRs of wall, roof, and floor wood assemblies. The approved wood assemblies are based on the FRR tables in Division B Appendix D Section 2.3 of the National Building Code. STC ratings from Part 9 of the NBC, Table 9.10.3.1. are also included. In total, there are over 2,400 unique assemblies for users to search from.
This new application enabled CWC to create a complete suite of online tools for the building industry. These tools represent the new generation of reference guides and design aids for Canada’s construction professionals.
